I've been following the news in the world
of music production. And that along with what I've learned in class I feel
definitely gives me a reasonable idea of what I can expect after I graduate.
In the past few decades, and especially in
the past few years, there has been a tremendous paradigm shift in music
production. The advent of digital recording technology in the 1980’s saw to
that. And the creation and marketing of recording equipment for home and
project studios is acting as a catalyst. The availability of high-end recording
equipment has increased, and the prices have drastically lowered. And if my
high school economics teacher taught me anything, it's that accessibility and
affordability have a positive effect on a demand curve.
The amount of whom Professor Snyder would
call “bedroom producers” has intensely escalated in the last couple of years,
or at least as I’ve observed in central Ohio. The accessibility of recording
equipment has caused many, including myself, who think, “Hey, I’m going to be a
recording engineer” to be able to actualize that.
Social media is another big factor in this
phenomenon. It’s easy to communicate with other engineers and producers and
inevitably a community arises. Just before I began writing this blog post, I
sent a mix I’ve been working on to a fellow engineer, whom I know only through
Facebook, for feedback. And being somewhat a veteran (compared to the most
recent crop of local engineers), I’m constantly helping others with their mixes
and giving recording and mixing advice.
Competition is a huge factor in my
success. With all of these local engineers and I in the area competing to
record the local artists and make money to buy recording equipment, and even
what we’ve seen in the Scripps school and the limited availability of the music
production major, it’s important to work hard, maintain a sharp edge, and
secure a place at the top. And that’s what I hope with my education.
With an education designed to prepare me
for the music recording business, I feel that I may get the edge I need to
succeed in the ocean of music production. I really am passionate about what I
do, and I would like to do it for a lot longer. I would like to some day own my
own world-class recording studio, with all the tools I need to perform my craft
to the absolute best of my ability. For me it’s all about the craft. With my
education I’d like to sharpen my abilities, as well as secure my future in the
business.
